A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step

Walking in the footsteps of 19th century South Africa, we bring to life the Anglo - Boer - Zulu Battlefields. African Battlefields in association with Rovos Rail and Air is offering this unique concept of integrating South African Battlefields and game reserves with transportation in a 1944 DC 3 luxury aircraft and the worlds most luxurious train "The Pride of Africa"

This 10 day luxury African Battlefields Tour & Safari is available for 12 to 16 passengers.

Day 1
On your arrival at Johannesburg International Airport South Africa we will be waiting to transfer you to the Capital City of Pretoria. We take you on a short City tour before having lunch, after your long flight a relaxing game drive as been organised for you in the late afternoon.
Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2
After breakfast you are transferred to the airport for a 1½ hr flight to Ladysmith in a 1944 Douglas DC 3 luxury classic aircraft. Using a Mercedes mini coach you will be collected and together with your tour guide you will visit Winston Churchill’s train ambush and capture site and the Colenso gun site where 10 guns where captured by the Boers. We have lunch in Ladysmith before embarking on a tour of the Spionkop battlefield to explain the events that took place and why so many British soldiers died.
Dinner is at your lodge on the Battlefields (Battle of Ladysmith).

Day 3
Today we visit the open air battlefield museum of Talana on Pete Smith’s farm in the coal mining town of Dundee; there is also an excellent glass and beadwork collection on site. Moving to Rorkes Drift we visit the site where the Welsh Borderers distinguished themselves with 11 VC’s. We have lunch before travelling onto the battlefield of Isandhlwana and the Zulu victory of January1879, this being the biggest single defeat of a modern British army against the spear and shield of an African warrior.
Dinner will be served at your Lodge in Zululand.

Day 4
After breakfast we visit the Ulundi battlefield and the total defeat of the Zulu army within half an hour of giving battle, close to the site is Ondini and a reconstruction of Cetshwayo’s kraal which was destroyed. After lunch in Ulundi we travel into Hluhluwe Game Reserve with a chance of seeing the “Big 5”. We also have a game drive in the mini coach while on route to the rest camp.
Dinner is at Hilltop Camp where you can relax listening to the night sounds of this 96 ha game reserve.

Day 5
Early morning you will be collected for a day game drive in an open game vehicle stopping for a picnic lunch in the reserve. This area was the private hunting grounds of the Zulu King Chaka, today the park is renowned for the conservation of the Rhino. After lunch we carry on with our game drive to see the various eco systems that the park as to offer. In the late afternoon we will return to the rest camp.
Dinner is at the rest camp restaurant in a relaxed environment.

Day 6
Leaving Hluhluwe game reserve we visit the oldest town in Zululand of Eshowe, here you can see some of the Zulu crafts that are made by the local community; we have lunch at the river side. In the afternoon we visit an authentic Zulu Village to interact with the “People of Heaven” the Zulu. Here you stay in the visitor’s part of the village.
Dinner is at the restaurant

Day 7
After a leisurely breakfast we say farewell to the Zulu’s and travel south into Durban for a tour of this cosmopolitan City, we make a stop at the Victorian Indian market where amongst other things you can buy freshly ground Indian spices. After lunch we visit Ushaka Marine World on the sea front.
Dinner is served at the hotel restaurant.

Day 8
You are transferred to Durban Rail Station to board “The Pride of Africa” for your three day journey to Pretoria. Lunch is served as the train passes through the rolling hills and cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal. Sit back, relax and enjoy the vista,
Dinner is served as we pass through the Swaziland border.

Day 9
Wake up call for an early game drive in the Mkhaya Game Reserve. Departing for Komatipoort brunch is served in the dinning car. In the mid afternoon you arrive at Malelane for a game drive in the famous Kruger National Park, followed by a Boma dinner.

Day 10
Breakfast is served as the train begins the ascent from Waterval Onder and climbs the escarpment up towards Belfast. Lunch is served as the train departs Witbank and onto Rayton where a steam engine will haul the train into Pretoria.
15h00 – Arrive at Rovos Rail’s Capital Park Station, Pretoria.
Road transport will be waiting to transfer you to Jo’Burg Int airport for your onward journey.

Includes accommodation, meals and excursions as well as alcoholic beverages whilst on board the train.
